Light filters through the leaves and branches of the magnificient Oak which dominates the property. It is estimated to be about 250 years old! In the fall, you have to cover your head or get hit with falling acorns which quickly cover the ground below.
Pyracantha, laden with orange berries which last well into the winter, attracts birds during the cold months. This is just one of the many shrubs on the property that continue to add color with their berries when the seasons change -- as do the holly bushes planted along the turkey pen.

A view looking down the driveway shows how plantings of trees and shrubs help to screen out neighboring housing developments. The slim evergreen (right-center) is the Irish Juniper, Juniperus hibernicus. Click here to see a full panoramic of plantings up the driveway to the main house and cottage entrances.
Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen' provides interest year round. The bark is exfoliating in winter; new growth is bright lime-green in the spring, and huge white flowers, like those pictured here, follow in the summer. Autumn turns the leaves dark red before they fall.

A view towards the west arch and field. The tree on the left is Nyssa sylvatica (Tupelo or Black Gum), and was planted in 1986 when only 6 inches high.
An old bench in the shade of the great Oak's trunk provides a cool resting place on a hot summer's afternoon. Just beyond to the right you can see one of the two columns that highlight the entrance from the west garden to the main pond area.
